The Role of Magnets in Sound
Why do AirPods sound so good?

The sound quality of AirPods does not come from the magnet alone, but from the way the magnet, coil, diaphragm, acoustic design and electronics work together.
Inside an earphone is a very small speaker driver. One of its main components is a permanent magnet, which creates a constant magnetic field. A tiny coil moves in this field. When the electrical music signal passes through the coil, the magnetic interaction moves it back and forth, moving the diaphragm with it. The diaphragm's vibration produces sound.
Put simply: electrical signal → coil movement → diaphragm vibration → sound

A good magnet matters because it provides a strong, precisely controlled magnetic field in a small space. This can help the diaphragm follow the music signal faster, more accurately and with less distortion. This is especially important for bass, detail and volume, because such a small earphone has very little available space.
But other factors are just as important to the sound of AirPods:

Apple's own speaker driver,
the earphone's internal acoustic chamber,
the noise-cancellation and microphone system,
digital signal processing,
adaptive EQ,
and software that continuously adjusts the sound to conditions inside the ear.
The magnet is like the speaker's motor: without it, the diaphragm could not be driven efficiently. Good sound, however, depends on this magnetic motor being designed very precisely, with the electronics, diaphragm and acoustics all matched to it.
