Mounting Magnets

Key Facts and Applications

Mounting magnets are permanent magnetic fasteners that combine magnetic holding force with the advantages of screw mounting. This design is particularly useful where holding force alone is not enough and a stable, accurately positioned and securely mounted solution is required. They are often used to attach covers, lids, panels, brackets and other technical components.

  • One of the main advantages of mounting magnets is their ease of installation and high holding force in a compact size. When selecting a design, consider both its dimensions and the application conditions, including the weight of the item, load direction, receiving surface material and condition, and whether the attachment will be permanent or temporary.

  • In pot magnets, the magnet is enclosed in a steel housing that provides mechanical protection and concentrates the magnetic holding force on one side. This generally gives them a much higher holding force than unhoused magnets of the same size. Protective finishes also help reduce corrosion risk and improve durability, making them useful in industrial and general assembly applications.

  • Rubber-coated magnets are useful where surface protection is as important as a secure hold. The coating helps prevent scratches, making them suitable for painted, varnished or sensitive surfaces. It also increases friction and can improve resistance to sideways movement.

  • In practice, the actual holding force always depends on the receiving surface. Smooth, clean steel of sufficient thickness gives a much higher holding force, while uneven, painted or thin surfaces can reduce it. Always consider real application conditions when choosing a mounting magnet.
