Neodymium Magnets
Key Facts and Applications
Neodymium magnets (NdFeB) are rare-earth magnets and are among the strongest permanent magnets in widespread use. Made from an alloy of neodymium, iron and boron, they deliver high magnetic performance in a compact size. This is particularly useful in technical applications where strong holding force, precise positioning or reliable attachment is required in limited space.
-
Designations such as N35, N42 and N52 indicate the magnetic material grade. As a general rule, a higher number means higher magnetic performance. The letters M, H, SH and UH indicate temperature resistance classes.
-
Typical operating temperatures vary by grade. Standard N grades are generally suitable for use up to 80 °C, while special grades can withstand higher temperatures. For technical applications, selecting the right grade is therefore just as important as choosing the shape and size.
-
Neodymium magnets contain iron and are prone to corrosion without a protective coating. Nickel plating and multilayer Ni-Cu-Ni coatings are commonly used to reduce this risk.
-
The material is hard but brittle, so impacts can cause chipping or breakage. Machining is generally not recommended because heat can cause a partial loss of magnetic strength.
-
A wide range of shapes and sizes is available for holding, closing, assembly, sensing and positioning applications, as well as other uses requiring a strong magnetic effect in a compact design.
